Thread Locking: Chemical Loctite vs Mechanical Washers & Nord-Lock
Deep dive into thread locking technologies. Anaerobic adhesives (Blue 242 vs Red 271) versus wedge-locking Nord-Lock washers in heavy industrial plants.
Anaerobic Chemical Adhesives
- Medium Strength (Blue 242/243): Disassembles with standard hand tools; seals against moisture and minor vibration up to 150°C.
- High Strength (Red 271/263): Permanent locking; requires localized heat (250°C) and high break-away torque for removal.
Wedge-Locking Washers (Nord-Lock)
Nord-Lock washers use cam-geometry to lock bolts mechanically. The cam angle between the washer pair is greater than the bolt thread pitch, creating a physical wedge effect that increases bolt tension if the fastener attempts to turn loose.
